Today (12 December 2019), the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) decided it has jurisdiction to deal with a Palestinian complaint lodged with it against Israel, in complete disregard of established international law, the Committee’s own past rulings, and an unequivocal opinion of the UN’s legal counsel that the Committee lacks jurisdiction in this case.
Israel deeply regrets the Committee's erroneous decision, which is not based on solid legal grounds, and is clearly selective and biased against Israel.
It is regrettable to see that the same Committee entrusted with preventing discrimination has chosen so blatantly to discriminate against Israel with its ruling. This is yet another example of the ill and biased treatment Israel has continually received from UN bodies located in Geneva.
While Israel is and will always be committed to the elimination of racial discrimination, it no longer has any reason to believe that it can receive fair, equitable and non-discriminatory treatment from this Committee.
Commenting on the decision, Ambassador Aviva Raz Shechter declared that “as far as Israel is concerned, the Committee has lost credibility, and the cause of the Convention has regrettably been gravely undermined by the very body entrusted with protecting it.”
